History Prizes
With the generous gifts from Sir Ernest Lee-Steere, A E and Ellen Williams and Dr Alby and Sue Williams, the Society conducts a Western Australian history prize competition annually. The competition for the Lee Steere Western Australian History Prize is held every two years, and the A E Williams History Prize, on the alternate year.
The winners receive a monetary prize and have their paper added to the Library at The Society.
2010 A E Williams History Prize
The A.E. Williams Prize is offered by the Royal Western Australian Historical Society, utilising funds donated by the late Mr. A.E. Williams, augmented by his wife Ellen and son Mr Alby Williams, to promote interest in the history of Western Australia. A former headmaster in the Education Department, Mr. A.E. (Bert) Williams was a respected teacher and historian, and former president of the Society. The prize honours his work.
Eligibility
Entries are invited from:
- members of the Royal Western Australian Historical Society or
- members of any society affiliated with the Royal Western Australian Historical Society
Professional historians, either practising or retired, that is persons who have earned their living substantially from the writing, of history are ineligible.
Subject
Any aspect of Western Australian history.
Conditions
- Entries should be between 1500 to 2000 words in length, A4 format, typed and supported by maps and illustrations as appropriate
- Entries must be in the hands of the Executive Officer, RWAHS, Stirling House, 49 Broadway, Nedlands 6009, by 30 June 2010.
- All entries will be retained in the Library of the Society at Stirling House.
- The decision of the judges will be final. The Society reserves the right to make no award.
- The result will be released in time for the Society’s Annual General Meeting, where the winner receives the prize.
The judges are interested in receiving original interpretations on any aspect of Western Australian history. Entrants are encouraged to use a full range of sources, including letters, diaries, newspapers, debates, original reports and oral history interviews, as well as secondary published sources. The Society encourages entrants to write in some depth on a limited topic, such as family history, community history, business history (including primary industries) or biography rather than to attempt broad histories of the State.
Sources should be acknowledged in accordance with historical convention. A bibliography should also be included.
Presentation
The 1st prize of $400 and 2nd prize of $100 will be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Society.

2011 Lee-Steere Western Australian History Prize

Postgraduate students (Master and Doctoral) and professional historians, that is, persons earning their living substantially from the writing of history, are ineligible.

Any aspect of Western Australian history.

- Entries should be up to 5000 words in length, typewritten and supported by maps and illustrations as appropriate.
- Entries must be in the hands of the RWAHS Executive Officer by 30 June, 2011.
- All entries will be retained in the Library of the Society.
- The decision of the judges will be final.
- The result will be released in September 2011.
