Library

The Library collection of the Royal Western Australian Historical Society consists of material that specifically deals with Western Australiana and history. The majority of the collection has been donated to the Society. If you have items that might be useful to the Library's collections, please contact the Society at 49 Broadway, Nedlands.

The Library's catalogue is available electronically using Collections Mosaic, but this is not yet available on the internet.

Library use is free to members. A fee of $5.50 is charged for use by individuals who are not members of the Society, and institutions who use the collection are charged a fee of $22. Fees are also charged for research undertaken by Library volunteers and for photocopying. Please see Membership page for application form and subscription details. The collection includes:

  • Books on Western Australian history, including rare books some of which are not readily available in other library collections
  • Newspapers, such as the Perth Gazette, the Inquirer, and Western Mail, which are indexed by volunteers
  • Journals relating to Western Australian history. There is also a collection of the journals of historical societies in other Australian states and territories
  • Maps of Western Australian regions and towns, including early Perth subdivision maps
  • Facts of the North­, an editor's file of material relating to the north-west from 1965 to 1979
  • Documents, including early letters, and pamphlets
  • Newspaper cuttings which are clipped currently and filed by subject
  • Essays which have been submitted for various competitions
  • Collections of private papers which are unique and listed for ease of use
  • Early Days, the annual publication of the Society
  • Newsletters of more than 70 historical societies throughout Western Australia affiliated with the Society
  • Microfiche of a number of historical records, such as registers of births and deaths
