The Annual History West Lecture 2026

The Annual History West Lecture took place in the University of Western Australia Club lecture hall on Wednesday, 6th May.

In the Society’s centenary year this lecture took the form of a reflection on the life and times of Perth a century ago, exploring the built landscape and social scene of Perth in the 1920s. The lecture was presented as a double act featuring journalist and history writer Malcolm Quekett of the West Australian and the Society’s President, Richard Offen.

The audience of over 170 guests enjoyed a romp through topics such as the Group Settlement Scheme which proved to be a dismal failure, a serious derailment near Bridgetown of a train carrying the Prince of Wales, the cost of housing in the 1920s and Perth’s first theme park, White City where, according to the authorities, people were having far too much fun!

Thanks to support from PEET Ltd, one of Australia’s leading residential developers founded in Perth 130 years ago, guests were able to partake of a celebratory post-lecture drink in the delightful surrounds of the UWA Club.
