Paperback - Author: Peter B. Birch
After a family rift, he signed onto a whaling ship under a changed name, later deserting the ship when berthed on the south coast of Western Australia in 1844. He then walked over 200 miles (320 kilometres) on primitive roads to Perth. After a misstep landed him in the Fremantle Prison (the ‘Convict Establishment’) he became a successful and respected figure as a boat builder and gold prospector in Colonial Western Australia.
